The coveted title of Veolia Environnement Wildlife Photographer of the Year was awarded to Paul Nicklen from Canada for his image of emperor penguins on a frozen area of the Ross Sea, Antarctica. A King penguin gets covered in mud after a huge mud lake poured across the ice and separated them from the water at Salisbury Plain in South Georgia. The penguins emerged encased in mud before reaching the sea and throwing themselves into the ice-cold ocean for a much-needed wash.
