This ring-necked duck was sitting on a log when it was rudely disturbed by two territorial red-eared slider turtles. Trying to ignore the hard-shelled bullies, he soon found one of them nudging him with its nose. This duckling had a lucky escape when a heron seized it in its jaws and flew up into a tree to swallow it.  The duckling managed to wriggle free and dropped from the tree tops back into the water. Photographer Paul Hughes captured the incident while walking next to a duck pond in Dublin, Ireland.

Mandarin Ducks nest in tree holes. When the ducklings are only 24 hours old, they follow their mother and leave the nest. They can’t fly yet, but luckily the long drop does not harm them. (Planet Earth - BBC)
